Bollywood Dance


If Hollywood is the capital of English film industry, Bollywood is said to be the mecca of Indian film industry. The term Bollywood Dance Classes is actually a combination of two words namely Bombay and Hollywood. Today, the entire world recognizes the Indian film industry in the name of Bollywood. But actually, Bollywood refers to the Hindi film industry, which is only a part of the vast Indian film industry.



The type of dance performed in the Indian films are called Bollywood dance. Indian films and dance became very popular around the world during 1960’s, after the introduction of television and radio to the public. Earlier in Indian films, the dances were just gentle movements along with the music, but later the concept of choreography was introduced and Indian film dances became more professional. Bollywood dance was heavily influenced by western dance styles and cultures after the launch of cable TV.
Bollywood Dance Classes


Literally, Bollywood dance is a mixture of various styles like kathak, Indian folk, belly-dancing, western popular, jazz, freestyle, western erotic dancing etc. Bollywood dance was not so popular in western countries a few decades back. But now Bollywood dance has become an important dance category in most of the international dance competitions and festivals. Today, we can see the presence of Bollywood films and dance styles in US, Canada and in many European countries.

Bollywood dance is famous for its choreography, costumes, sets and music. In most of the films, the hero and heroine performs dance sequences in beautiful sets along with many junior artists. Bollywood music or songs are an important facet of Bollywood dance. The choreographers makes each dance moves according to the music.

The Bollywood dance is generally classified into 3 genres. They are:

Classical: These genre is mainly performed by experienced and trained dancers. It mainly include all the Indian classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, kathak etc.

Inspired Folk Dance: Most of the Indian film dances include group performances and they are generally inspired by the folk tradition of the country. They include dance mix of bhangra, giddha, dandia, jhumar, ghoomar and many others.

Bollywood Fusion Masala: This category is entirely different from the above two. It is heavily influenced by the western style and is performed with high energy, acrobatics, movements and fusion music. Bollywood fusion masala combines disco, hip hop, jazz, freestyle etc. and is now considered as one of the most popular dance forms across the globe.


Recent trend in the Bollywood film industry is the item numbers. Item numbers are a form of erotic Bollywood dance mainly performed by celebrities. Item dances will be extremely bright with colourful sets, fancy costumes and powerful music. They are also considered as an effective film promotion method, as they will be launched before the original film release.
